《Up in the Air (Undergrounding Plan)》
電柱と電線は、いわゆる「景観破壊」の元凶とされる存在だ。美しい街並みを損なう敵として忌み嫌われ、電線の地中化、いわゆる「無電柱化」運動の標的にされ続けている。
電柱と電線が織りなす景観の擁護派である私は、こう考えた。「よろしい、ならば望み通りのものを見せてやろう」——そして、電柱を消し去ってみることにした。
電柱にぴったりと身体を寄せ、真上を見上げて写真を撮影した。それから、電柱「だけ」を消去したのである。そこに浮かび上がってきたのは、レベウス・ウッズが描いた建築構造物を思わせるような、幻想的な空中浮遊の造形だった。
Utility poles and wires are the ringleaders of what is called “landscape destruction.” Reviled as the enemy of a handsome streetscape, they are the target of frequent calls for burying the wires, the so-called “pole-free” movement. As a defender of the landscape of poles and wires, I thought: very well, then, let me give you what you want, and I decided to make the poles disappear. I pressed myself flush against a pole, looked straight up, and took the photograph. Then I erased the pole, and only the pole. What emerged was a fantastical floating form, like one of the structures Lebbeus Woods drew.
