A collection of small buildings, around five stories tall, believed to have been built between the late 1960s and the 1970s, the latter half of Japan’s high-growth era and the years just after. Each one caught my eye while I was out and about, and struck me as "Kawaii"(cute). I photographed them straight on, squaring up the verticals and horizontals, and cut away the background, which may be why they look small, like scale models or dollhouses. In cutting them out, I traced the outlines of the wires by hand, one by one, and the presence of the utility poles and wires in the frame stands out as well. About a third of the buildings pictured have already been demolished. They are not celebrated architecture, just ordinary buildings that vanish without a fuss.

Utility poles and wires are the ringleaders of what is called “landscape destruction.” Reviled as the enemy of a handsome streetscape, they are the target of frequent calls for burying the wires, the so-called “pole-free” movement. As a defender of the landscape of poles and wires, I thought: very well, then, let me give you what you want, and I decided to make the poles disappear. I pressed myself flush against a pole, looked straight up, and took the photograph. Then I erased the pole, and only the pole. What emerged was a fantastical floating form, like one of the structures Lebbeus Woods drew.
